There Our Hearts Will Be: Counting The Cost Gracefully.
After publishing his famously academic Quest for the Historical Jesus, Albert Schweitzer surprised the world. Instead of settling into a life of scholarship and acclaim, he felt compelled by the good news of God’s love to spend the rest of his life serving impoverished communities and establishing medical facilities in Africa. Why? He says he realized that the wisdom of Christ and the love of God cannot be grasped from a distance. They must be lived, practiced, and followed. This Sunday we turn to Mark 8:27-38 and 1 Corinthians 2:1-16, two texts that remind us that the wisdom of God is not grasped through ideas, status, polish, or performance. It is learned in the quiet, vulnerable places and through the lived realities of life. Moments when fear is overwhelmed by overflowing grace and God’s love is revealed as bigger, braver, and more healing than anything we were taught to fear. Come. Worship. Join the journey as we discover again the love that will not let us go; the love that grounds us in hope and sends us out in Spirit-led generosity.
